David Holmes
It was such a great shock to hear that brother David had passed after illness. That is how much he did not focus on himself but on others.
We would like to thank sister Esther for absolutely everything she has done or rather that the Lord has done through her, she not only informed us but comforted us. Reminding us all of the great hope that we have in Jesus. The hope that David himself had in Jesus. The hope that drove David to do so much to give comfort and hope to people and Glory to God.
Our initial contact with David was over the phone. He introduced himself and wanted to know how we ran the Soup Kitchen. He spoke to the different leaders in the Soup Kitchen. Then finally one day he asked if he could drop by and visit. We were very happy to have him. He showed a genuine interest and spoke to a lot of people including our service users. This was a midweek service because we run a Tuesday and Thursday midweek and then a Sunday service which is a full hot meal service. Then David asked if he could come with other people from Swindon church on a particular Sunday to the Soup Kitchen. We said yes and we’re very excited to have them and it was brilliant.
The conclusion of that matter is that the Swindon Church Soup Kitchen was established and now runs on a regular basis serving well over 50 adults at any given time. David was not content to just give people food, he invited our Community leader to also come and be a guest speaker during divine service to galvanise the entire church on this vision of whomever does this for the least of my bretheren has done it for me and go ye therefore telling all nations.
We want to thank God for his tireless service, passion for assisting, and the tangible, lasting impact he had on the lives of others. He will be remembered as a champion who often worked quietly, diligently, and with great integrity.
David made our community a better place just by being in it. Their work has left an indelible mark on food and spiritual provision that will last for years to come, a legacy. He was true champion of social justice who didn’t just talk about aid/change but lived it. He was willing to put his hand up and say, ‘Here I am, send me'”.
He thought he had no spiritual gift and prayed tirelessly for it and once he had this vision he showed a fierce commitment, immense warmth, and and an amazing ability to convince others to see his vision. He was not afraid to ask for help.
Our community has lost a true stalwart. He was a pillar of strength, always putting others first and advocating for those who couldn’t speak for themselves
I will always miss the laughs we used to have at work Dave, it was a pleasure working with you and knowing you. You’re greatly missed. Until we meet again
Dear Esther and the whole family. Please accept our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. May God surround you with His comfort and peace.
As Scripture reminds us: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” — Revelation 21:4
May His promise bring you strength and hope in the days ahead. We will miss David so much. He was such a nice gentle loving man.
With love,
Hilda & Krisztiàn
Dear Colleagues at Oxford Carriers,
Mike kindly called me this morning to share the deeply sad news of Dave Holmes’ passing, and it has left all of us at VitrA shaken.
Dave was one of those rare people whose quiet presence brought stability to everything around him. He did not seek attention, yet his contribution was always felt. In the busy, often pressured world we all work in, he had a way of easing the day simply by being who he was — calm, dependable, and quietly committed to getting the job done well.
What we saw of Dave was a man devoted to his work, his principles, and the people around him. He gave freely of his effort without expectation. The quiet ones often carry more than we realise — and when they leave, their absence is felt deeply.
Times like this inevitably lead all of us, ourselves included, into reflection. They remind us that a person’s true measure is not found in noise or recognition, but in the quiet good they leave behind. Dave’s steadiness, kindness, and integrity are part of that quiet legacy.
While we at VitrA feel this loss, we know it will be felt far more deeply by his colleagues at Oxford Carriers and, most of all, by his family and loved ones. Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.
Please pass on our sincere condolences to Dave’s family. He was a good man, and he will be remembered with respect and gratitude by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
With sympathy and respect,
Tony McGuigan

David was a truly gentle soul who brought kindness and quiet strength to our mission of giving out books on the streets of Swindon. He joined us many times with a caring heart and a sincere desire to make a difference. David believed in standing for what was right, and he showed that through his actions — offering not just books, but warmth, dignity, and respect to everyone he met.
His presence reminded us that small acts of kindness can carry great meaning. He gave his time freely, spoke with compassion, and served with humility. David will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. Until we meet again 🙏
May God grant you comfort and peace at this time Esther. Keep strong and stay bless 🙏
May Sincere Condolences to Esther
May the Lord our Creator comfort you at this difficult time 🙏
