When I was young, many years ago, a sweet gentleman would come.
With a white bushy beard, and a twinkling smile, bringing joy to life so humdrum.

He came bearing gifts, of much joy and enjoyment, and of course some good chocolates too.
His presence would bring, the promise of fun and much laughter, as he spent happy days with you.

He was a gentle soul, who dressed in brown corduroy pants, always a smile on his face.
I never remember, a cross or angry word, he was always charming and so full off grace.

He was my grandmother’s brother, he lived far away, in the fair British queens beautiful land.
He visited us once a year, a happy jolly gentleman, and we always had a time so grand.

My dearest Indrajit ajoba, I will sincerely miss you, your sweet smile and that twinkle in your eye.
You will always be in our memories, always happy and smiling, even though we must say goodbye.

A gentle soul, a kind-hearted man, a good friend and my dear darling brother,
He filled our lives with laughter, love and much affection.

He was fifteen years older, more mature and grown up, but that did not change a thing,
He was so full of joy, with a twinkle in his eye, his great humour always laughter would bring

Although he lived far away, the connection was never lost, he would always call and come visit me,
Those delightful visits were filled with good food and joy, life became as good as it could be.

He always called to ask me what he should get me, and he would get it no matter what it was,
Usually some makeup, once an eyelash curler, he kept wondering what that strange thing was.

I will miss you dear dada, your sweet smile and laughter, and your joie de vivre, without it life will be a strife.

I will never forget Baba’s husky chuckle. His laugh was so distinctive and he laughed often. He was such a gentle soul and you could see how much he cared from the way he would ask me how I was. I always felt love from him, and I will never forget that.
Although not a blood relative, he was every bit of what family means to me.

Kaka, was one of the most affectionate, lovable and a very gentle soul. Will deeply miss his presence, the twinkle in his eyes and that infectious smile of his which made all of us so happy whenever he was around us. May God give him eternal peace.

I have known Bhaisaheb ( Dr. Phalke ) from the time he got married to Shubhra and the connection was stronger as he and my father were both radiologists and knew each other. Bhaisaheb was a very gentle, affectionate and kind person. I was always welcome and felt like family everytime I visited Shrivenham. We will miss you and thank for leaving behind a legacy of warm welcome.

Ajoba , my granpa’s younger brother was my absolute favorite. He loved to laugh and I adored him. The cheerfulness in him and his sense of humor was his unique identity. Everytime I met him, he had an interesting story to tell. In our last meeting, he expressed his fondness for football and also mentioned that he briefly served as a team doctor for Swindon town football club. He was so jovial, and you could tell he loved life.
We pray for him to be at peace.???

One of the pleasant memories I have of my childhood visits to Gwalior is going to Indrajit mama’s room, where he used to be busy studying. At that time I never realized that I could be disturbing him. He always gave time and was very kind and gave me nice juicy golden raisins.
Later he went off far and became a doctor but visited us once a year. With his presence came kindness, fun, and laughter. He will be in our memories forever.

    Way back in 1973 a
    Hesitant and nervous
    Rebellious and scared
    Angry and insecure
    Pre teen
    Met a gentleman
    With twinkling eyes
With a soft yet firm voice
    With a lovely welcoming smile
As she walked into her new temporary abode
    Far away from her dad
    Into his family home
And all of a sudden the self doubts disappeared.
For in him she saw a reflection of her father
    Affectionate and encouraging
It remained so all these years
The pre teen has now turned 60
She has a family of her own
Who share her respect and esteem for the gentleman
    She calls Mausaji –
The memories of the warmth and of the love received
When she was most vulnerable still gently cloaks her.
The same affection extended to her husband and children
    Warms them
In years that followed as her family grew
“Never Mind “their lapses , the love received was unchanged
The cheerfulness, the sense of humor, the generosity of affection
    All remained the same
Thank you mausaji for being a huge part of our lives – for loving us as family
We will miss your annual visits
But we shall meet again ……. in another world …. in time and take up where we left off
Till then all our regards and love ……

Mama’s sudden demise has left a void in our lives. We all used to look forward to his yearly visits to Pune when we would share his spontaneous humour and jokes over a good drink. An evening with Grewals was a must to delve into the “Balle Balle Culture” of North India and dive into the good old days of yore.
Heaven’s too need cheering up and Mama has a job ahead. God has his own ways.
A few nostalgic lines come to my mind. ” There is an ole belief, that on some solemn shore. Beyond the sphere of grief, We shall certainly meet once more.

Indrajit Dada was a kind and gentle soul, with a wicked sense of humour.
I have known him for over 65 years and used to watch his exploits as a tremendous sprinter at the local Collegiate Track meet, when I was almost 10 years old, where he invariably won the Gold medal for the 100 yd dash.
Even though we lost touch from time to time, he had the knack of making me feel comfortable around him, whenever we met.
After he married one of my favourite aunts, our relationship never changed but grew stronger, in fact.
It was wonderful to spend some quality time with Dada, in August 2019, in Albufiera. I shall cherish each and every moment of out time together over the years, and the memories will stay with me forever.
I shall miss you Dada and may your soul rest in Peace.

    [3/1, 09:42] PRITHVIJEET:

He was a wonderful, soft spoken and effervescent gentleman who defined that very elusive term(gentleman) for me through the years. I wish you his family strength and courage and pray for Dadaji’s peace of spirit and longevity on earthly realm, in our collective memories.

    HE WILL REST IN PEACE.

I saw both Rohini Bua and Dadi’s dedication towards him through the years and always marveled at their care and concern. I know it’s painful to bid him adieu but I feel he lived his life with utmost dignity, spurred on by your love and cocoon.

Do share my condolences and prayers with Shridhar Kaka and family.

I first met Indrajit Phoophaji during his wedding to my Uma Bua in Lucknow in the late 1960s. I was a child then and fondly recall when, as a teenager, I had visited Gwalior and stayed at his Bara at Phalke Bazaar. ROHINI was possibly 21/2 years of age and Sreedhar had begun to talk.

BUA and Phoophaji, all will agree, made such a beautiful pair inside out and their lovely bond sustained itself for all these years together.

He was just a thorough gentleman. His visits to Lucknow were a source of such delight to my own family.

My uncle, late Thakur Yashwant Singh, was Phoophaji’s class fellow in Scindia School so the relationship with him was from both the maternal and paternal side. He was a miracle of a man.

I sincerely pray that God Almighty rests his soul in peace for ever.

He was such a joyful presence for anyone and everyone. Modern men need to take a leaf out of his life script to know exactly what a gentleman is.

He was a treasure on Earth and is sure to spread his smiles and unaffected gestures in heavenly realm.

His soul soars high, blessing us with his omnipresence.
