Pete was a truly inspirational leader during his time at NHS Digital. He was absolutely dedicated right up until the end. He will be hugely missed by the board and all of our colleagues.
Too soon Pete, too soon. The most decent, kind and inspirational friend you could wish for. You always enrichened our lives and those memories of our times together will sustain us in the days to come.
Pete was a much loved member of the Royal Wootton Bassett Orchestra. A wonderful french horn player, first rate musician and a lovely chap. We thank him for all he brought into our world.
I worked with Pete very sporadically for around 2 years when he was at Home Office. Whilst our engagement was fleeting I was very much struck by his kindness and willingness to work with someone far less knowledgeable than himself. I was very saddened to hear this news but glad to be able to share that he had a great impact on those he encountered only briefly.
I worked with Pete on cyber security for health and care, only ever meeting via video, often at crowded boards, and speaking over emails. Yet he made a lasting impression on me and I have learnt so much from him – his approach, his values, his ability to get things done. I keep coming across old emails from him. He was thoughtful and kind. He has made a lasting impact on the cyber security of the health and care sector, ultimately making the world a safer place. I am so sorry for your loss – my thoughts go out to your family.
It was the early 1990s when Pete first joined the band for a rehearsal at Whitman’s Barn. “What key is this song in?” he asked as his fingers poised over his electric piano… He considerately glossed over the blank glances that met this enquiry and adjusted his expectations accordingly (we soon demonstrated we could play in any number of keys at any given time, though not necessarily together). Fortunately, to our relief, we passed Pete’s audition and his tolerance of our inane humour has been appreciated to this day. His technical mastery of our various PA setups was just one of his many invaluable facets. We shortly began recording the album “Driving Home” and Pete’s wonderful touches on the piano and French horn add a class to the tracks that remain his hallmark. Future “jams” in Stratford and in more recent years at the Rose home in Westrop have been happy afternoons filled with conversation and laughter with Ruth providing cups of tea, generous meals and her own wonderful humour.
Pete’s early military career meant that we brought in the new millennium in a stately RAF venue before crowding back to his and Ruth’s flat in Bristol after an unforgettable evening as sporadic fireworks lit the city night.
Pete’s modesty (I once asked him what his current role was and he hesitated before revealing that he was the head of a team responsible for the entire UK border security), generous laugh and kindness were endearing attributes, as well as his positivity and professionalism… but he had one frustrating flaw. He was way too unselfish; trying to work a rehearsal around Pete’s life would often run something like “Well the kids are sailing on Saturday morning, then I’ve got to get Bethany to her piano lesson, then James has a tennis match and a bass lesson… Sunday? But I do have to take James to his rugby match first and help out with the coaching and then pick up Bethany before James’s drum lesson…” He was the very model of how to be a wonderfully supportive and inspiring dad – and no surprise that he has left two accomplished musicians in his stead.
There are moments in life which are rosy in recollection and some that as you live them you know are priceless. Playing a live gig with the dancefloor packed in front of us while the bodies move to the pulse of the music, singing out joyously on the choruses, is a magical feeling. To turn and see behind and alongside you such a wonderful team of friends and musicians as Adi, Russ, Pete and (more recently) Joe is an experience to be cherished.
It has been a privilege to know Pete; his loss seems impossible to fathom. It’s difficult to envisage our next band meet without him. For one thing, how did he ever connect all those cables..?

Getting to know Pete through rugby was one of the high spots of my Coaching career. Always keeping the right perspective on things and coupled with a great sense of humour, he was a great guy to be with on Sunday mornings and some lunchtimes too! We will all be poorer for his passing.
A special person, I would describe Pete as one of life’s energy “givers”. Always positive, thoughtful, dedicated, insightful, inspiring and someone who made things happen. I count myself lucky to have had him as a colleague and a friend and will hold many fond memories of the time we spent together. Ruth, Bethany and James, my thoughts are with you.

A great loss to the world way too early. Pete was great guy – bright, dependable, scrupulously honest, straight talking but warm and generous with his time and support. A real inspiration to me, and I am sure many others, who will be missed and never forgotten.
It’s in moments like these that words fall short. We have fond memories of a relaxed Boxing day with all the kids and that rainy camping weekend. Pete was a lovely man whom we will greatly miss.
Such an exceptional gentleman, we enjoyed many happy socials, sporting events and holidays. Pete’s warmth, humour, humility and kindness always shone through, even when he was dragging us across the Yorkshire Dales in the rain, “it’s not far now” (it was!). Pete excelled at work but his greatest success is his wonderful family, who will carry on his legacy, pragmatic, compassionate, adventurous, hard working and utterly dependable.
