I taught Steve at Hreod Burna School in the seventies. He was a ‘one off’, infectiously enthusiastic and keen to join in anything with a creative angle. He and I danced with Swindon Morris for a number of years. He was a founder member and drummer of the HB Jugband who were reunited for a series of memorable gigs from 2018 to 2022 when we met for the final time at Highworth in July. Steve played a leading role despite the advanced stage of his illness. No-one present will forget his performance as The Turkish Knight in the mummers play we performed that evening.
He was a brave, principled man who lived life to the full and who approached adversity with an indefatigably positive approach. I can honestly say that of the thousands of pupils I have taught in a 40 year career, there is no-one I am prouder of than Steve. He was an example to us all. It was a privilege to know him and his lovely wife Christine and to share such happy times together in recent years. He was a good man.
With much love to Christine and the family.
